Each Richmond 6th grade student spends one class a week for three quarters of the school year in the Living Arts classroom participating in 6th grade Health.
ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION AND REFUSAL SKILLS
Students will have the opportunity to learn about different types of communication, such as passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, or assertive communication. Students will learn the benefits of assertive communication by reading about real-life scenarios and engaging in role plays. The overall goal for the unit is to teach them to advocate effectively for themselves.
NUTRITION
Students will learn methods for living a healthy lifestyle. With careful supervision, students will have the chance to prepare well-balanced meals in the Living Arts room, equipping them with the skills to prepare their own healthy food one day. Students will learn what makes a well-balanced meal by considering the 6 essential nutrients. This unit will give students the skills they need to be knowledgeable of what they put in their bodies and will teach them how to make healthy decisions independently.
FIRST AID
The last unit examines the skills necessary to respond to basic first aid emergencies. Students will learn how to put on a sling, CPR skills, and the Heimlich maneuver. They will also discuss how to react if they are hurt or if someone else gets hurt, including how to handle broken bones and burns. One example includes applying the Check, Call, Care method. As with previous units, strong communication skills are emphasized.
