Thoughts from the Rolling Desk

Life in a middle school is full of surprises.  Facing a full moon Friday with a large number of subs in the building coupled with a foggy commute was enough to make us a little nervous about the trajectory of the day.

Events, however, conspired to remind us to focus on the small and wonderful things we see at RMS every day.  A morning walk around school revealed poetry recitations (Edgar Allen Poe for seasonal appropriateness), a stop action film project examining volume and surface area, spirited discussions of which was an independent and dependent variables in outlined experiments, groups of students solving logic problems, numerous study spaces being used quietly, egg drop prototypes being tested, and adults discussing students and curriculum together.  As the sun became brighter and the colors more vibrant, music was added to the picture thanks to Mr. Hall’s guitar in the hallway during lunch.  This is a special place - offering examples of what is going well amidst a seemingly increasingly chaotic world.  For this we are thankful.

Thank you also to the families who attended our round table on Wednesday night where we discussed the difficult topic of device use and social media.  We are in the process of compiling a list of resources and information surrounding this topic which we will share with you soon.

As we head into what promises to be a great weekend, we wanted to remind you of a couple of things.

8th Grade Field Trip Information

Following the success of our 8th grade language and culture field trips last year, we will again offer two 8th grade trips that will take place from Wednesday, May 28 - Friday, May 30.  Please join us at the first family meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6 pm.

RMS Fitness Room

We are in the process of updating our fitness room to better serve our students throughout the year.  We are currently at the halfway point of fundraising, hoping to match a generous grant from the Byrne Foundation.  We accept any donation, made out to RMS, and can provide our tax exempt number if needed.  Please reach out with any other questions.

Enjoy the sunshine and the last gasps of summer this weekend.  Be well, stay safe, take care of each other, and remember that we geese have got it.

RMS Cafe

Information about menus, mealtime, and application for RMS’ meal program are available here.

The RMS lunch program is run “in house” and does not follow a state or federal program.  If your family may benefit from assistance for meals, please contact Robin Morley-Ploof in the office for more information.  The program is confidential and runs the same way as the more traditional cafe meal funding program.

RMS works hard to accommodate the dietary needs of our community, so if you have any questions, concerns, please contact Austin Jacobs.

PTO Gaggle - 10/18

The PTO appreciates the RMS Faculty!

Thanks to Kara Della Croce and Austin Jacobs for creating a beautiful breakfast spread for the RMS faculty to enjoy on the Teacher In-Service Day last Friday. Carving out moments throughout the year to show appreciation to the adults who work with our kiddos each day is one of the primary missions of the PTO. We have several more events scheduled throughout the year, please visit the PTO website if you’d like to volunteer or make a donation.
